What is a VPA (UPI ID)?

Short answer

A VPA (Virtual Payment Address), also called a UPI ID, is an alias like name@bank that points to a bank account. You can receive UPI payments without sharing your account number or IFSC. The part after @ is the handle of the PSP bank that issued it.

Hindi mein samjhiye

VPA ya UPI ID ek naam jaisa address hai, jaise rahul@okicici, jo aapke bank account se juda hota hai. Isse paisa mangwaya ya bheja ja sakta hai bina account number bataye. UPI ID share karna safe hai, lekin UPI PIN kabhi share mat kijiye.

How a UPI ID is created

When you set up a UPI app, it verifies your mobile number through the SIM (device binding) and fetches the accounts linked to that number. It then creates an ID on its PSP bank's handle, such as 9876543210@ybl or name@okaxis. One bank account can have several UPI IDs across apps, and you can change or add IDs in the app.

Is it safe to share a UPI ID?

Yes, sharing the ID only lets people send you money or send you a collect request. Money leaves your account only when you enter your UPI PIN. Most UPI frauds trick people into approving a collect request or entering the PIN to 'receive' money. Receiving money never needs a PIN.

For businesses

Merchants get VPAs from their acquiring bank or aggregator and usually display them as QR codes. Checking that a VPA is correctly formatted before a payout avoids failed transactions. Try the UPI ID format checker.
