What is a PSP bank in UPI?

Short answer

A PSP (Payment Service Provider) bank is a bank that is a member of UPI and connects payment apps to NPCI's switch. It issues UPI handles (like @okaxis or @ybl), sponsors third-party apps (TPAPs), and is responsible for the compliance of the UPI traffic it carries.

Hindi mein samjhiye

PSP bank woh bank hai jo UPI apps ko NPCI se jodta hai. UPI ID ke @ ke baad wala hissa (handle) PSP bank ka hota hai. Google Pay jaise apps PSP bank ke through hi UPI chala paate hain.

Four roles in every UPI payment

One bank can play several roles. NPCI's switch sits in the middle and routes the request. More detail: how UPI works.

What a PSP bank is responsible for

Onboarding and device binding for its handles, sponsoring TPAPs, and fraud and risk monitoring. It also handles complaint resolution under NPCI's dispute framework and stores payment data in India. When you see a charge described as a 'PSP' entry on a statement, it usually refers to the UPI payment service provider in the transaction.

Why PSP infrastructure matters

A PSP bank's UPI switch has to handle peak loads, NPCI's timeout rules and response codes, and the resulting reconciliation. Banks often run this on a dedicated UPI switch rather than their core banking system.
