What is UPI AutoPay (UPI mandate)?
UPI AutoPay lets a customer approve a recurring payment once with their UPI PIN. The merchant can then debit the account on schedule, for subscriptions, EMIs, SIPs or bills. The approval is called a UPI mandate. The customer can pause, change or cancel it any time from their UPI app.
UPI AutoPay mein aap ek baar UPI PIN se mandate approve karte hain. Uske baad EMI, subscription ya SIP ka paisa har baar apne aap kat jata hai. Mandate ko UPI app ke 'AutoPay' section se kabhi bhi pause ya cancel kar sakte hain.
How a UPI mandate works
- The merchant sends a mandate request: amount or maximum amount, frequency, start and end date.
- The customer approves it once with their UPI PIN.
- Before each debit, the customer gets an advance notification.
- On the due date the merchant runs the debit. Up to NPCI's per-debit limit, no PIN is needed. Above it, the customer approves each debit.
How to cancel UPI AutoPay
Open your UPI app (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or your bank's app). Go to AutoPay or Mandates, pick the mandate and choose Pause or Cancel, then confirm with your UPI PIN. Cancelling the mandate does not cancel the underlying subscription or loan. Settle that with the merchant or lender separately.
UPI AutoPay vs e-NACH
Both are recurring-debit mandates. UPI AutoPay is set up in seconds inside a UPI app and suits consumer subscriptions and smaller EMIs. e-NACH is registered against the bank account through net banking or a debit card, and is the long-standing rail for loan EMIs and larger amounts. Lenders often offer both and fall back from one to the other.
