What is Re-KYC?
Re-KYC, or periodic KYC updation, is when a bank or NBFC asks an existing customer to reconfirm or refresh their KYC details. RBI requires regulated entities to update KYC periodically based on risk: at least every 2 years for high-risk customers, 8 years for medium-risk and 10 years for low-risk. It is also needed whenever details change.
Re-KYC matlab purane customer ka KYC dobara update karna. RBI ke niyam ke hisaab se high-risk customer ka har 2 saal, medium ka 8 saal aur low-risk ka 10 saal mein KYC update hota hai. Address badla ho to bhi re-KYC karna padta hai.
How to do re-KYC
If nothing has changed, many banks accept a self-declaration through net banking, the mobile app, email, an ATM or a branch. If your address changed, you share a valid proof of the new address. If your documents are outdated, the bank may ask for fresh KYC, often by video KYC.
What if you don't update?
Banks may partially restrict the account after notices, for example by stopping debits, until KYC is updated. RBI has told banks to give adequate notice and offer non-branch channels. A re-KYC message with a link asking for OTPs or remote-access apps is a scam. Update only through your bank's official app or branch.
