What is CKYC (and a CKYC number)?
CKYC (Central KYC) is India's shared KYC database, the Central KYC Records Registry, run by CERSAI. When you complete KYC with one regulated entity (a bank, NBFC, insurer or mutual fund), your record is uploaded there and you get a 14-digit CKYC identifier (KIN). Other institutions can then download that record with your consent instead of collecting documents again.
CKYC ek central KYC database hai jo CERSAI chalata hai. Ek jagah KYC karne ke baad aapko 14 digit ka CKYC number milta hai. Doosra bank ya NBFC wahi record use kar sakta hai, baar-baar document dene ki zarurat kam hoti hai.
How CKYC works
- A regulated entity completes your KYC and uploads the record and documents to the CKYC Registry.
- The registry de-duplicates it and issues a 14-digit KYC Identification Number (KIN).
- Another institution searches the registry, with your consent and an OTP, and downloads the record.
- If your details change, the institution updates the record, and all linked institutions get the update.
How to find your CKYC number
Your bank, insurer or mutual fund usually sends it by SMS or email after KYC. You can also ask any institution where your KYC is complete to look it up, or check your mutual fund or CAS statements, which often print it.
CKYC vs eKYC vs KRA
- CKYC: a central registry across banking, insurance, pensions and securities.
- eKYC: a verification method (Aadhaar-based), not a registry. See Aadhaar eKYC.
- KRA: KYC Registration Agencies for the securities market (SEBI). Largely interoperating with CKYC.
Why lenders care
A CKYC download can prefill onboarding and cut drop-offs, but the record can be stale. Lenders still check liveness and match the record to the person applying. That's the job of a digital KYC flow.
